I am not a cheapskate. On the contrary, I love to shop. My husband might tell you that I live to shop. My love of Nordstrom and addiction to Amazon.com were at one time legendary among my circle of friends, and my UPS guy once told me I was his best customer. I tend to be overly generous and see every holiday, birthday, and event as an excuse to go overboard. If I had millions of dollars, I'd probably be one of those people on the news that no one feels sorry for--the ones who somehow manage to blow all their money and then some on ridiculous extravagances, only to end up filing for bankruptcy. Frugality is not in my nature.
I started using coupons because I like nice things but we don't have millions of dollars, and because I was tired of fighting with my husband about money. I was lucky enough to marry a guy who has a clue about finances, and I have no doubt that without him I'd be penniless. We worked out a system that worked for both of us--separate accounts--and I quickly realized that the less I spent of things I need, the more I'd have left for the things I want. But a funny thing happened along the way: I realized that I actually like saving money. To me it truly is an adventure, the adventure of finding style and luxury on a budget.
