sunday shopping 11-28-10

I hope you all have had a wonderful holiday weekend!  Mine has been spent enjoying a lot of family time, putting up Christmas decorations, & fighting off a cold.  Aside from that last one, it has been a very fun and relaxing few days spent almost entirely at home.  Even so, I did manage to make it out for a little while today for a quick trip to Walgreens and Publix.

For all you Southerners, there is an AWESOME deal on gas at Publix this week--with any $25 purchase (before coupons) you can get $10 off a $50 gas gift card of your choice.  There is also a coupon for $10 off a $50 American Express Gift Card.  This one does not require a grocery purchase, but there is a $4.95 activation fee, so you end up paying $44.95 for a $50 American Express card--$5 free dollars is better than nothing!  You can find both coupons in the weekly sales flyer at the front of the store, and it will be good through Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on which day your store starts the new ad.  (My Publix starts their new ads on Thursdays)

While you are grabbing the weekly flyer, be sure to also grab two new coupon booklets that just came out--the Winter Family Savings booklet and the All the Trimmings booklet.  (I posted a picture of them below).  Both have a ton of great store & manufacturer's coupons that are sure to be useful this month.  If you can't find them at the front of the store, ask at customer service.

Here is what I got:

At Publix, I spent $10.13 for $43.71 worth of groceries, a savings of 77%.   (In this transaction I also bought the gas card, but I didn't include it in my grocery total because, well, it's not groceries.)

Coupons Used:
(1) Raincheck for Bailey's Creamer-Buy 1, Get 1 Free
(6) $1 off Bailey's Creamers (blinkie machine located by creamer)
(4) $1 off Gardein product (Smart Source insert, 10/17)
(2) $1 off Blue Diamond Almonds (Smart Source insert, 8/22)
(2) $1 off Fresh Express salad (printable here)

At Walgreens I spent $14.83 for $122.90 worth of drugstore merchandise, a savings of 88%.  (Most of the money I spent was sales tax.)  I absolutely love those Command hooks & use them everywhere, so I was very excited to be able to stock up on lots of them for FREE.  In fact, my husband had just run to Home Depot yesterday for 3 packages of them, which we can now return.  The free Scotch tape was also a big plus.

Amazingly enough (for Walgreens!), all my transactions went very smoothly, with no coupon issues.  My only "problem" was self-inflicted--I forgot to use a Register Reward I had leftover from Thursday's shopping trip.   For the Scotch tape, I was sure to hand the cashier the manufacturer's coupons before handing her the B1G1 coupon.

When I got home, I had an email from Walgreens announcing Friends & Family day this coming Wednesday, December 1st with a 15% off your entire purchase coupon.  I guess sometimes it pays to procrastinate!   If you are planning a trip to Walgreens this week, I would recommend waiting until Wednesday to get the extra discount.  I may have to go back!

  1. Does your Walgreens have a problem taking the Scotch tape coupons from the Publix flyer since they have the Publix logo? I know you should be able to use them there since they are mfg. coupons, but I've had problems in the past...thanks!

  2. My Walgreens didn't say anything about them, but I went to my "regular" store where the cashiers are all very friendly. They scan fine with no issues, so if the cashier gives you any grief, you could try asking nicely for a manager's approval.
